Backronym is a live multiplayer word game by Steve McGuigan. Everyone sees the same string of letters, everyone invents a phrase, and then the room decides which answer deserves the point. There is no dictionary answer hiding behind the curtain. The fun is seeing how differently a group of people can interpret exactly the same prompt.
For example, C A T could become Clouds Ate Tuesday. Clever, silly or completely unexpected: make your answer worth a vote.
What makes it different
Most word games ask whether you know the right word. Backronym asks whether you can make a memorable one up under pressure. A technically perfect phrase can lose to a strange answer that makes the whole room laugh. That makes it work especially well for friends on a call, a group sharing a room, or anyone who enjoys party games built around personality rather than trivia.
Rounds are short, voting belongs to the players, and no download or account is required. The game runs in a browser on phones and computers. A private room can hold up to 10 players, and the invitation link is the only thing friends need to join.
Built for the messy answers
A backronym is an invented phrase fitted to letters that already exist. Backronym turns that idea into a contest: the letters arrive first and the meaning comes later. The prompts are deliberately open-ended, so the same set can produce a miniature story, an accidental slogan, total nonsense, or something unexpectedly clever.
The game is designed to get out of the way. Its custom mobile keyboard favors likely next letters while preserving every possible answer, and the between-round results are formatted so the full room can be shared as text rather than flattened into an image.

Keep it fun
Do not post harassment, threats, hateful content, sexual content involving minors, spam or anyone's private information. Player-written content appears live and is not reviewed in advance. This game is not designed for children under 13.
Help or report a problem
Email help@backronym.app for support, privacy requests or abuse reports. For a bug, include your device and browser, what happened, and roughly when. For an abuse report, include the room and approximate time plus a screenshot if appropriate. Do not send passwords or unnecessary personal information.
Reports are reviewed by the operator, not an automated emergency service. Because games are temporary, a complete history may no longer be available. Leave the room if you do not want to continue participating.
